Children Explore Roots Starting Sunday, July 4, children ages 5 to 12 and their families are welcome to dig, sift and explore Israel in an archeological playground created exclusively for Shalom Street, the museum of Jewish life and culture located at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The special exhibit, "Diggin' Israel," features a family-friendly replica of an excavation site of a home during the Second Temple period and represents LOREDO'S ATHLETIC CLUB the museum's most ambitious pro- gramming since opening its doors in December of 2003. Designed for group participation, the program offers a show-and-tell of Israel's basic archaeological facts and findings. Sessions take approximately an hour and a half and begin inside Shalom Street with the guidance of its resident acting troupe as well as other audio and visual media. Moving outdoors to the "big top" on the grounds of the Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Jewish Community Campus, participants rotate through various activities, exca- vating, identifying and examining their finds, and then creating their own take-home project. Working in close partnership with Melitz, a non-profit educational agency in Jerusalem, the goal was to provide children a connection with Israel through archaeology. With the support of the Charles H. Gershenson Trust Museum Fund, "Diggin' Israel" will run from July 4 Miss Kim Presents... and United Methodist Church. Event chairman was Ken Lipson of Temple Israel. Team leaders were MaryJane Larson (Temple Israel), Barbara Hechtman (Temple Israel), Herb Gartner (Prince of Peace) and Joanna Risk (United Methodist Church). Huntley-Ivanhoe Homes donated T-shirts to all participants. through Aug. 1, offering group ses- sions scheduled during museum sum- mer hours Sunday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, with evening pro- grams every Tuesday. Reservations are recommended. Registration is required and available at the front desk of the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Tickets are $4 per person or $18 per family.
