efore West Bloomfield native
Phil Horowitz left for Reno,
Nev., to participate in the
national ABC bowling tournament, he
attended a funeral for close friend
Jackie Unatin. Unatin's husband, Paul,
then asked Horowitz to roll a perfect
300 in Jackie's honor.
"I was questioning why he would
give me such a difficult task,"
Horowitz says. "But not being a
bowler, he just said it because he
knows I've been bowling all my life."
Horowitz, 65, had thrown nine - pre-
vious 300 games, including one in
ABC competition. But only two
bowlers in the ABC's 101-year history
had ever rolled two perfect games in
the ABC. Early last month, Horowitz
became the third, in unique fashion.
Horowitz rolled games of 187 and
182 in the doubles competition, then
began his final game with six strikes.
But he didn't consider a possible 300.
"If you think about it, then you're not
going to throw it," Horowitz explains.
"You get into a mental zone where
your concentration level is such that
you're not thinking about anything.
You just go up to the line and you
know you're going to throw a good
shot."
In his seventh frame, a spectator
yelled as Horowitz released the ball; one
pin remained standing. However, both
the spectator and, at the last second,
Horowitz himself, noticed that the S-
pin was missing from the original set.
The official scorer had the pins re-
racked, Horowitz received a second
chance and continued his strike barrage.
Many spectators gathered to watch
Horowitz' 10th frame. 'After I threw
the first strike in the 10th, I didn't
even look up [at the crowd],"
Horowitz says. "I just walked back to
my spot and waited for the ball, and
then I threw the 11th and threw the
12th."
Reality settled in after his final
strike.
"It's kind of like the adrenaline flows
out. Sometimes your knees get a little
weak. But I was fine this time."
Horowitz received a plaque and a
gold medal for his perfect perform-
ance. Back home, when Unatin asked
if Horowitz had shot a 300, "I just
