Metropolitan Detroit
Congratulations to JAMD's 29 senior class members on their
acceptance to these institutions of higher learning:
Stephenie Sasson
"Every year, we were told Hershy would
not make it to his next birthday. Finally;
when he turned 6, we decided it was time
to start planning for the future. We realize
that he may be with us another year, or
another 10 years."
Today, Hershy spends his days in a
wheelchair, eats through a feeding tube,
and communicates by blinking his eyes
in response to questions. He attends
school at the Wing Lake Developmental
Center in Bloomfield Hills three days a
week, and is taken on frequent outings
to the park, the library and neighbor-
hood stores.
Sasson produced her first documen-
tary, On My Own, at the age of 18. It
was based on the lives of several adults
with developmental disabilities who
were involved in a residential program
similar to Detroit's JARC organization
and was presented.at the International
Cannes Film Festival.
"I felt it necessary to expose the reality
that exists when living with any form of
disability," said Sasson. "I believe that I
am able to give my subjects a voice. It is
only when people are 'moved' that they
begin to take notice."
Tinman is looking forward to seeing
As Daylight Breaks when it premiers next
week. Although Hershy is too old to
benefit from the gene-therapy that is
currently being developed, Tinman
wholeheartedly endorses the continua-
tion of research for Canavan and other
related diseases. ❑
`As Daylight Breaks" will be shown
as part of the Lenore Marwil Jewish
Film Festival 8 p.m. Monday May
3, at the United Artists Commerce
Theater, 14 Mile and Haggeri
roads. It will follow the 8 p. in.
screening of the 35-minute film
"The Collector ofBedford Street."
Stephenie Sasson and Jordana
Sontag will be present to answer
questions following the screening.
