Braces Basics For Kids - Pad 2

KAPLAN-PERLBERGER

Braces work by putting steady pressure on teeth and by staying
in place for a certain amount of time. Most kids just need regu-
lar braces with wires and maybe rubber bands to keep even
pressure on the teeth. Recent research shows that light, consis-
tent pressure by the new "space-arc" type wires move the teeth
more efficiently and more comfortably than heavy forces. Heavy

simpler appliances in many cases or growth guidance
appliances. The wires on your braces help to move your teeth and the rubber bands
can assist in correcting the alignment and the way your teeth fit together.

Nowadays, we attempt to straighten the teeth without having to remove any. Many
times a palate expander is used to make more room to accommodate the teeth, as
opposed to reducing the number of teeth to fit into the space you have. Of course, that
cannot always be done, as the orthodontist must consider each case individually and
we would not want to compromise stability. Expansion is usually done on a growing
individual, which is why modern orthodontics is treating individuals earlier as
opposed to later. It is rarely too late to consider orthodontics and an orthodontist can
over your special case with you.

After you get your braces off, you will need to wear a retainer. The retainer helps in
holding the teeth in their new positions. The teeth have been constantly moving and
the retainer serves as the brakes to tell them the movement should stop. Your retainer
will be specially molded to fit your newly straightened teeth and help keep that excit-
ing new smile.
