Ruth Adler Schnee: "Semaphore,"
mohair and cotton blend, 1950-51.
The combination of works spot-
lights the first complete overview of
the museum's collection of art, archi-
tecture and design.
Works by some 80 artists fill "100
Treasures" with various media that
include paints, photos, metals,
ceramics, fibers, glass, prints and
graphics.
"The path itself substantiates that
which is only imagined and forms
the evidence of that which is not yet
built," says Libeskind, who donated
an untitled chamber work, an archi-
tectural mediation on themes from
Heraclitus, completed in 1983.
Libeskind is one of several Jewish
artists whose projects appear in the
anniversary display.
Ruth Adler Schnee, a Southfield-
based textiles designer who earned
her master's degree from the
Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1946,
showcases a selection of her printed
fabrics, including "Semaphore,"
which was created in the early
1950s using printed mohair and a
cotton blend.
Roy Lichtenstein, who experi-
mented with the abstract, is repre-
sented by Modular Painting with
Four Panels, #7, a gift of Dr. John
and Rose M. Shuey. The oil and
magna work on canvas was complet-
ed in 1970, some 27 years before the
New York artist's death.
Selected pieces from the exhibit will
remain on view throughout the cen-
tennial year and will be accompanied
by educational programs and a full-
color catalog with essays. ❑
