STEVEN DORFMAN on page 87
from continuing to enter on-air radio
contests.
"Imagine the mindset of somebody
who would take the time to investigate
when each local station was going to
conduct its on-air trivia contest and
then, when the appropriate time came
up ... turn the radio on in the office,"
Trebek said of Mr. Doifinan, who often
shared his prizes with co-workers.
His love of words and word games
flowed into other areas as well, having a
number of his creations run as New York
Times crossword pilzzles.
In addition to Jeopardy!, Mr. Doifinan
produced several game show pilots.
"Steven was always wheeling and dealing
— developing ideas for game shows —
some of them in foreign countries in for-
eign languages," Trebek said. "He could-
n't get enough of game shows."
Trebek remembers Mr. Doifinan
often working on new material in his
office to the background of reruns on
cable-TV's Game Show Network.
He described him as a man with a
kind heart and a generous soul, with a
great imagination, a marvelous curiosity
and a fantastic wit; a punster.
"He had a true passion for Jeopardy,"
said the show's executive producer,
Harry Friedman. 'All of us on the staff
were inspired by his inventive and origi-
nal style."
And that style included finding ways
to turn names of his family members
and friends into Jeopardy! clues.
"Steven was constantly searching for
trivia," his father said. "He always car-
ried around a little notebook to record
his notes and thoughts.
Trebek announced upcoming plans
for the Jeopardy! library to be dedicated
as the Steven Doifinan Memorial
Library. And a special episode of
Jeopardy! is being prepared to highlight
Mr. Dorfinan's material, with a tribute
planned in his memory
"Steven didn't just march to a different
drummer," Trebek said. "Steven made
the drums and composed the music
himself Steven was one of a kind."
