S

erving Christmas dinners in
soup kitchens, distributing
toys to children in shelters,
delivering Meals on Wheels,
visiting older adults in nursing care —
all are just a few of the many jobs per-
formed. by Jewish volunteers through-
out the Detroit area on Christmas Day
as part of Mitzvah Day, sponsored by
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
More than 800 volunteers, many of
them families with children, spent
Christmas morning lending a hand at
40 social service agencies in the area.
Those working with the Salvation
Army at the Masonic Temple in
Detroit helped feed and clothe more
than 3,000 people.
"We're here to help those in need,"
said Scott Jacobs, 17, of Farmington
Hills. "It's the right thing to do. We
realize how fortunate we are and want
to help those who are less fortunate."
Charlotte and Sherwin Corlin of
West Bloomfield helped clean tables
after people had finished their
Christmas meals.
"We've been doing this for years,"
she said. "We enjoy seeing people in
need get a little help during the holi-
day season."
The event was supported by the
Ford Motor Company Fund and
chaired by Debbie Berger and Jeremy
Kahn.
"The beauty of Federation's Mitzvah
Day is that it's a great way for Jewish
families to get together and do some-
thing meaningful on Christmas, a day
that can be very stressful or isolating
for people less fortunate in our com-
munity," Berger said. ❑

Brothers Scott and Brandon Jacobs, ages 17 and 14, respectively, of Farmington
Hills help distribute warm clothing at the Masonic Temple in Detroit.
