whenever the mood hit him, Jack
made Osso Bucco, the delicious Italian
dish of veal shank with vegetables,
Chablis white wine and seasonings ...
and Harriet did the baking, plus
preparing its noted gefilte fish.
LELLI'S INN on Woodward in
Detroit had three generations of own-
ership before it burned down ... It was
owned by second generation Michael
Lelli, son of original owners Nerio and
Irene Lelli ... while a third generation
also there ... was Beckie. cashier, Steve
in the kitchen and Michael Jr., host.

Lelli's was originally opened by
Nerio, his brother Mario, and wife
Irene ... Their first New Year's Eve was
for a whopping total of four people
...One of the couples came because he
rented them the chairs at 50 cents a
week ... and brought another couple.
It was located in a building that was
kind of horribly wonderful or wonder-
fully horrible ... It opened with seating
for about 140 people ... but after four
additions the seating was for 650 or
more.
Few will ever forget those green stip-
pled walls, low ceilings, a maze of
arches, little alcoves and tiny rooms ...
A lot of charm and wonderful food.
IF ANYBODY BACK in the 1940s,
before World War II ended, ever
thought Rose and Irving Guttman
would someday own one of the area's
leading delicatessen-restaurants, they'd
be considered prime candidates for the
booby hatch.
At Auschwitz, Rose was among
those scheduled for the gas chamber a
la Nazi sadistic elimination ... Even
though she was picked to work in the
kitchen, no one at Auschwitz knew
from day to day who would be next ...
From there, Rose was one of 300
picked to make ammunition at anoth-
er concentration camp ... followed by
a terrible six-week walk to Bergen-
Belsen ... with hardly anything to eat
... She was among those sent there for
the bizarre job of stacking bodies ...
Other Nazi horror stories are unbeliev-
ably dreadful ... Rose was freed by the
British ... hadn't eaten in so long,
drank three or four cans of Pet milk
plus fresh rolls and fresh butter ...
winding up in the hospital with
typhoid fever.
Today, Rose is still cooking up a
storm at Hello Deli in West
Bloomfield.
NAME OF THE new restaurant
that took over the former Hugo's and
Brunetti's restaurants in Southfield was
taken from the car driven by Pat
Archer, new owner with Pete Beso
Excalibur.
