Predicting the Future

It is possible to estimate if your child will need braces in
the future by certain aspects of their developing teeth.
For example, when all the baby teeth (also known as
deciduous or primary teeth) have erupted, if there is a
likelihood that orthodontics will be needed. The perma-
nent teeth take up more space than the baby ones they
replace so even if the baby teeth look perfect in ideal
alignment, their is probably going to be crowding.

DEYTSHE 60TH

To best guess if your child has enough room in the pos-
terior or back of the mouth, you can measure from the front of the lower
1st molar, which erupts into the mouth around age 6, to the back of the
lateral incisor, which is the 2nd tooth from the midline. If the measure-
ment is less than 22 millimeters, then you can guess there will not be
enough room for the future permanent teeth.

To determine if the palate or roof of the mouth is wide enough, the meas-
urement you want to see between the right and left 1st permanent molars
i s 38 millimeters, or the length of a dental cotton roll. This dimension is
fairly consistent from age 10 to late adolescence.

Ryzewicz of New Jersey and friends Eric
Carver and Paul Wolf. The bride's nieces
Rachel and Samantha Ryzewicz were
flower girls.
Following a honeymoon in Hawaii,
the couple reside in Oak Park

Lastly, if your child can fit their little finger in between the upper and
lower front teeth when the mouth is closed, then you may have a future
problem with overlap. Also if you do not see at least 50% of the lower
teeth when the teeth are closed together, there may be a problem with a
deep over-bite.

All these are best evaluated by an orthodontist who can best determine
growth direction and when to intervene. For more information or a com-
plimentary consultation, call our office on the border of West
Bloomfield/Commerce Township (248) 360-7700.
