A

late night Oct. 4 service
brought a crowd of people
and a gaggle of chickens to
Bais Chabad of Farmington Hills.
Performing kaporet (symbolic
atonement), the group recited prayers
and waived the birds over their heads
three times. The pre-Yom Kippur serv-
ice — which may alternatively be per-
formed with money then donated to

charity — is meant to bring a person
to the awareness that he or she might
be deserving of death because of his or
her sins and will then be motivated to
repent and ask God for mercy.
The fowl is then slaughtered in
accordance to Jewish kashrut law and
is either given to the poor or sold,
with the money given to charity. LI
