before the holidays to sing, bring cake,

instead of visiting with friends, I went
by myself"
His introduction to the para-chap-
laincy program began with a phone call
by Rabbi Avie Shapiro, formerly of
Fleischman Residence in West
Bloomfield, but now with the Jewish
Hospice and Chaplaincy Network.
"He knew I was a Torah reader and
asked me to spend a Shabbat at
Fleischman with the residents," Saks
said.
"I recruited my brothers, Shlomo, 24,
and Ben, 18, to come, too," he said.
While the three brothers are college
students, they continue to spend
Shabbat at Fleischman during their sum-
mers and school-year breaks from class-

es.

spiritual needs and physical limitations."
The expectations of the certified para
chaplain are to be supportive of residen
in whatever specific needs they may
have.
"We know we are introducing two
complete strangers and we work careful-
ly to match them up so they have every
chance of success," Jarcaig said.
Gottesman talks with pride about
Saks and his future plans, as if he is a
member of her family. "I'm so proud of
him," she said.
Saks feels such a strong bond with
Gottesman that he constantly encour-
ages others to become involved.
"I want other young people to
become a part of the program," Saks
said. "There are so many who have tal-
ents and abilities that could be used to
help others. Those who are musically
inclined could visit with their instru-
ments, those who cook could make a
side dish and bring it by. The residents
always love candy and sweets — and
they really love to see young people."
In addition, he said, being a para-
