Dr. Burnstein, 60, of West Bloomfield,
opened a free medical clinic in the Grace Center
of Hope, a homeless shelter in
Pontiac.
"He donated so much of his time,
giving free medical care, treating
an ing from a cold to AIDS, said
his wife, Dana. "He did that until he
was so sick that he couldn't."
Dr. Burnstein died of lung can-
cer on Sept. 26, 2003.
Born in Detroit, Dr. Burnstein grad-
uated from Cass Tech High School in
1961, then attended the University of
Michigan, receiving a bachelor's of sci-
ence degree in 1965. He graduated
from the Des Moines College of
Osteopathy in 1970.
He opened the cardiology department at what
was then Oakland General Hospital in 1975 and
became head of cardiology and the medical direc-
tor of the intensive (-Are unit at St John-Oakland
Hospital in Madison Heights until his retirement
in 1997. He also volunteered at the Cabrini
Clinic, a free medical clinic in Detroit.
But his family always came first. ,
Our father clearly understood his priorities and
was there for us always," said his son, Ian, during
the eulogy. "If something was going on in your
life, you could always count on our father being
there for support.
"There was no greater joy for our father than to

see us enjoy life. He wanted to make sure that we
were provided with every opportunity, and his
family was without question his priority."
He was a man who needed very little sleep; fami-
ly members would wake up on weekend mornings
to find Dr. Burnstein finishing their garden work.
"He was my best man at my wedding," said Ian.
Dana Burnstein said the Grace Center of Hope
is naming a clinic after him, a clinic
"which will serve not just the rescue
mission but will serve the greater
Pontiac area
