National Bank; Comerica Bank also
was buying bonds. All have purchased
them in the past. It was also
announced that the State of Michigan
would be making "a very significant
purchase" that would be announced in
the next two weeks.

representative to the United Nations
from 1997-1999, and a close advisor
to Prime Ministers Ariel Sharon and
Benjamin Netanyahu, said that his
mother was born in Detroit in 1921.
Visiting Detroit "is like coming to a
hometown," he told the audience
before remarks focusing on the ongo-
ing political struggle for the State of
Israel.
Gold recalled the "moment of great
hope" that the signing of the Oslo
Accords on the White House lawn 10
years earlier had brought to people.
But he noted that just three months
and one day later, the Palestinian dele-
gation to the U.N. introduced "a
whole series of 24 resolutions con-
demning Israel in the General
Assembly."
"It was then that I began to under-
stand the nature of the struggle," Gold
said. "It's not just a military struggle,
but a struggle to delegitimize the very
existence of Israel."
Gold reminded his audience of their
role in this struggle. "This issue is not
just for Israel to deal with. It has
spilled over into anti-Semitism, espe-
cially in Western Europe. We haven't
been well equipped to handle this
