e strong bonds between
Congregation Shaarey Zedek
and the Jewish homeland were
proudly on display at the congregation's
annual State of Israel Bonds Tribute
Dinner Sept. 9.
The dinner, honoring congregants
and community leaders Marta and
Benjamin Rosenthal, brought 375 peo-
ple together and raised $11 million.
Israel's former
ambassador to
the United
Nations Dore
Gold filled in
as speaker
when former
Israeli Prime
Minister
Benjamin
Marta and Ben
Netanyahu
Rosenthal
was unable to
attend.
"I've been volunteering for 27 years,"
Marta Rosenthal said upon receiving
the Declaration of Independence
Award with her husband. "What sus-
tains me, besides my family and
friends, is my Detroit community and
the State of Israel."
Rosenthal recalled her first taste of
fund-raising when, at age 16, she
attended Shaarey Zedek's first Israel
Bonds event that honored her grandfa-
ther, Cantor Jacob Sonenklar.
"Grandpa Jay was a strong Zionist," she
told the audience. "It would mean so
much to him that we are here tonight,
and I feel his presence with us."
The celebration was tempered by
news of two terrorist suicide bombings
in Israel that killed at least 15 persons
and wounded and maimed dozens.
Joshua Matza, chairman of the board
of Israel Bonds, told the quiet audience,
"Israel's enemies remain heartless ene-
mies." He recalled the reaction to a bus
bombing that killed many children
three weeks earlier. "They passed out
candy to celebrate. These are the mon-
sters we confront on a daily basis.
"We must remember that a strong
Israel is the guarantee of the strength
