tives about Goddess. There also will be
many unscripted personal moments,
including Roseanne visiting her chil-
dren and meeting with a daughter she
gave away for adoption. Real Roseanne
will consist of 13 episodes to be broad-
cast over seven weeks.
By the way, Roseanne now wants to
be called "Roseanne Barr" again. For
those keeping track: it was Roseanne
Barr, then Roseanne Arnold, then
Roseanne, and now Roseanne Barr.
Well, at least she hasn't copied
Prince, the rock star, and adopted a
symbol for her name.

Another Savage Emerges

KALA SAVAGE, the sister of actors
FRED and BEN SAVAGE, has started
to emerge from her brothers' shadows
with her critically acclaimed perform-
ance as a young Jewish woman in
JULES FEIFFER's Off-Broadway play,
Bad Friends.
The play, which opened to generally
good reviews on May 15, concerns the
conflict within a Jewish family living
in Brooklyn around 1953. The parents
are Communists, and their ideological
adherence to the party line forms
much of their conflict with their
daughter, the character played by
Savage.
Savage's acting was praised in almost
all the reviews. One of her co-stars in
Bad Friends is Jewish actor MARC
FEUERSTEIN, the star of TV's Good
Morning, Miami.
The play will be at the Lincoln
Center Theater through July 27.
Savage, 25, has frequently appeared
on television, including a recurring
role on Felicity and a one-year stint on
the soap Santa Barbara, when she was
only 11.
Her brothers, of course, were also
child actors. Fred, 27, starred in TV's
The Wonder Years and has had a mod-
erately successful career as an adult
actor since graduating from Stanford
University. Ben Savage, 22, starred in
the hit teen sit-com Boy Meets World
and just completed his junior year at
Stanford.
Fred described the Savage family as
very culturally Jewish in a 2001 inter-
view with the L.A. Times.

The Times noted that "he had a typ-
ical Reform Jewish upbringing includ-
ing Hebrew school in suburban
Chicago and a bar mitzvah at the
Stephen Wise Temple soon after his
family moved to L.A."
One of the producers of The Wonder
Years, KENT TOPOLO-SKY, was a
rabbinical school dropout who tutored
Fred for his bar mitzvah during breaks
on the set.
Fred told the Times that he felt it
very important to keep Jewish culture
alive.
Ben was recently quoted in the
Stanford college paper, following a
pro-Israel campus talk by radio jour-
nalist DENNIS PRAGER.
Ben commented, 'At Stanford we're
never exposed to speakers like this. His
views and people who share his views
are drowned out on college campuses."

Tony's Big Star

Hairspray, as expected, dominated the
Tony awards held June 8. Jewish actor
HARVEY FIERSTEIN won the Best
Actor in a Musical award and
Hairspray's Jewish composer, MARC
SHAIMAN, picked up a Tony, too.
The winner of the Best Actress in a
Musical, MARISSA JARET
WINOKUR, is a nice Jewish woman
from New York. Previous to Hairspray,
Winkour appeared in the touring
company of Grease and had a bunch
of TV guest shots.
Her character in Hairspray is quite
overweight. Winokur, 29, has a
healthy attitude toward her size. She
told the NY Daily News that she
delights in keeping a list of adjectives
that have been used to describe her in
the role.
They include "chubby, hefty,
dumpling-shaped, dimple-kneed and
thick in the ankles."
She added, "People don't want to
say the word 'fat.' But being fat has
never slowed down me down in my
work."
Interestingly enough, Winokur is
the grandniece of the great humor
writer S.J. PERELMAN and the
famous novelist NATHANIEL
WEST, who was Perelman's brother-
in-law. ❑
