ip-hop usually is not tied
to violin strings, but hip-
hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari
is not tied to what's con-
sidered usual for an instrumentalist.
Ben-Ari, who had classical instruc-
tion in Israel, realized her love for jazz
in the early 1990s, moved to New
York to study, expanded her career in
America and immersed herself in hip-
hop almost two years ago.
"Hip-Hop Meets Jazz" is the title of
the show she will perform as part of
the Jewish Community Center's
Encore Series. She will appear with her
band 8:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at
the JCC in West Bloomfield, where
her sounds will be very much like the
ones she presents at New York's famed
Blue Note Jazz Club.
"I like the beat, groove, production
and collaboration that is part of hip-
hop," says Ben-Ari, 30, who was intro-
duced to hip-hop while at a club with
her lawyer. .
"It's street music from the soul, so
it's very real. My career has changed so
much because of hip-hop."
Ben-Ari, who improvises many
kinds of music into her hip-hop
numbed, says her Israeli heritage
opens her to change and influences
the Mideastern melodies that move

Performances with her own band
often feature her original music pre-
sented without lyrics and without
Jewish themes.
"I'm bringing a bass player, drum-
mer and two keyboardists to the
JCC," says Ben-Ari, who recently has
been working with rapper Jay-Z.
"I love appearing before Jewish
groups because they make me feel like
I'm at home."
Classical Start
The contemporary violinist, who recent-
ly released a dance single, "Peace in the
Middle East," has had a busy year.
She was featured with pop star
Wyclef Jean, formerly a member of the
Grammy-winning group the Fugees, at
Carnegie Hall and with Jay-Z on a
New York radio station.
"I always believe that we should be
proud of who we are and turn our
background experience into something
really good," says the violinist, who
also appeared with Jay-Z at Long
Island's Summer Jam for 30,000 urban
music fans and on a live Showtime
special earlier this month.
"Whatever the background, it
should be channeled into the work."
Ben-Ari, who began studying classi-
cal violin when she was 6, was encour-
aged by violin legend Isaac Stern. He
