Spiritual Retreat
Shabbat experience planned for cancer patients,
survivors and family.
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute and Rabbi Joseph Krakoff of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek present
Nsiat Shlemt(t: A Journey Towards
Wholeness," a new Shabbat retreat for
Jewish cancer patients, survivors and
family members.
It is based on the institute's faith-
based spiritual support group, "Nsiah: A
Journey," and will take place at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield Friday and Saturday, March
14-15.
The retreat will begin with Shabbat
services at 6 p.m. Friday followed by
. dinner and an activity session.
Participants will reconvene for an inter-
active morning service Saturday at 10
a.m. followed by lunch, activity sessions,
a Seudah Shilishit (third meal) and clos-
ing Havdalah service. Cost of the retreat
is $50 per person.
During the retreat, participants will:
• Explore how religious beliefs and
Jewish practices can be used as strategies
to help people feel more in control of
the cancer experience;
• Explore personal spirit building and
remembered wellness with hands-on
experiences;
• Identify the tools available within
Judaism — such as one's belief in God,
prayer and ritual
— that can pro-
vide comfort,
hope and coping;
• Learn how to
refrarne negative
thoughts into pos-
itive ones;
• Be supported
by others living
through a similar
Rabbi Krakoff
experience.
Therapist Brenda
Beron and social
worker Patricia Milner Sachs, both can-
cer survivors, will join Rabbi Krakoff in
leading the group. Topics such as uncer-
tainty, helplessness, lack of control, the
doctor-patient relationship, treatment
related concerns, self and body image,
the effect illness has on family, reorder-
ing life and personal goals, social rela-
tionships and "Why me?" may also be
addressed.
Space is limited. To register, call Pat
Sachs by March 11 at (800)-KAR-
MANOS.
Joyful Greeting
