safety tether, which are especially
important for persons with reduced
reflexes.
"If you plan on putting your tread-
mill in front of your television, you
need to make sure you get a quieter
model," he says.
For those customers who do not
have a large place to keep a treadmill,
there are folding
machines available,
but Sherbin cautions
against them if space
is not an issue. "The
fold is a place for
instability in the
machine," he says.
Sherbin says a
good treadmill will
cost from $900 to

$4,000.

Stationary bikes also
come in many dif-
ferent styles, from
the standard upright
to a recumbent bike,
which allows a per-
son to sit back at a
45-degree angle and Nia1771 Stone

support. Upright-
bikes are available-iwifh'-dalladion- 171-
you can work botk Firms 4rid legs
at the same time. Stationary bikes typ-
ically run from $400 to $1,100.
During the past seven years, Sherbin

has only seen one major change in
exercise equipment: the elliptical
machine. This machine works both
arms and legs in a manner that simu-
lates natural walking or striding move-
ments, but without impacting the
joints. An elliptical machine takes up
less space than a treadmill, and can be
programmed for light to intense work-
outs.
Elliptical machines can cost any-
where from $600
to $2,300.
Sherbin says
good equipment
comes with good
warranties. If a cus-
tomer has a prob-
lem with the equip-
ment, a reputable
dealer should look
at the piece in the
home at no charge.
When using any
of these machines,
Sherbin stresses
that 15 minutes a
day is better than
nothing, and work-
ing up a sweat isn't
as important as just
maintaining a level
of exercise.
For those who
want to begin an
exercise program at
home but don t want to invest in a
machine tight away, Sherbin recom-
mends hand weights, stretch tubes,
gym balls and other inexpensive acces-
sories. He sells books and videos on
how to work out at home using these
