or the volunteers of Friendship Circle
and a group of children with special
needs, a Dec. 1 Chanukah party came
about with a slightly different edge
than their typical get-together.
"A lot of times we focus on serving children
with special needs by helping them and making
them happy — but this program makes us focus
on including the Jewish experience," said Rabbi
Levi Shemtov, director of the West Bloomfield-
based Friendship Circle, who co-hosted the party
with JARC's Merle and Shirley Harris Children
and Family Division.
"The Harris Division provides a range of serv-
ices and support to families with a child with any
disability," said Anne Fleming, JARC communi-
cations coordinator. The division offers advocacy,
case management, respite care, information and
referral, and social and recreational programs.
"Over 300 families who have a child with spe-
cial needs living at home are served by the divi-
sion," Fleming said.
The party was organized and hosted by Randee
Klein, social worker in the Harris Division. With
a focus on holiday fun, the children sang
Chanukah songs, ate doughnuts and cotton
candy, colored Chanukah pictures, made menorot
and Chanukah mobiles and listened to a special
reading of the Chanukah story by JARC volun-
teer Leslie Cohen of Ann Arbor.
