vou can't get a better day than the
most important Shabbat of the year."
While being called to the Torah as a
bar mitzvah was a major achievement
for Folkoff, it is, by no means, his
final goal.
"I want to continue my education
with the cantor or the rabbi, or even
on my own," says Folkoff, who also
has continued to attend services at
Beth Shalom. "I want to learn as
much as I can about the Jewish faith."
"Harold really likes to learn,"
Cantor Greenbaum says of his stu-
dent. He has so many questions
about Judaism."
In addition to Judaic studies,
Folkoff is looking for other learning
opportunities.
"I want to study to advance my
career," says Folkoff, who has been on
the office staff at the Agency for
Jewish Education in Bloomfield
Township for 24 years. "I'd like to
study inventory control and I might
take a computer class."
Lampron says, "Harold is such an
excellent role model for encouraging
other JARC consumers to better
themselves and improve their situa-
tions." Folkoff has taken part in JARC
programming to share his experiences
and outlook with others.
"He has spoken in our self-advoca-
cy training program, where he wrote a
speech and led a question-and-answer
period," Lampron says.
"I want other people to know that
they can do this, too," Folkoff says. "I
had to give so much of my time to do
this and to prove to myself I could do
it, and I want to encourage other peo-
ple so they know they can, too —
whether they are 12 or 13 or 50."
As important as Folkoff says it is
for him to "show people how far we
all can go," he has another, more per-
sonal motivation for becoming a bar
mitzvah.
"The main reason I did this," he
says, "is for me. I wanted to give
myself a gift."
