The National Foundation for Jewish
Culture created this award to ensure the
field of Jewish American humor received
the formal recognition it deserves.
Past award recipients include Alan
King (1998), Carl Reiner (1999) and
Sid Caesar (2000).
As Frank Costanza on Seen fell Jerry
Stiller won the 1998 American
Comedy Award for "Funniest Male
Guest Appearance in a Television
Series." He currently stars as Arthur
on the CBS series King of Queens.
Anne Meara has appeared Off-
Broadway in The House ofBlue Leaves,
and on Broadway in Eastern Standard and
Anna Christie, for which she was nomi-
nated for a Tony Award. Her film roles
include Lovers and Other Strangers, The
Out ofrownen- and The Boys From Brazil.
As "Stiller and Meara," the husband-
and-wife comic duo were part of the
Compass Players.-They then went off
on their own, creating a comedy act at

The National Foundation for Jewish
Culture, a leading advocate for Jewish
cultural creativity and preservation in
America since 1960, has nurtured a new
generation of writers, filmmakers, artists,
composers, choreographers and scholars
through conferences, partnerships with
local communities and institutions, and
sponsorships of annual grants and
awards in the arts and humanities.

Got To Have A Gimmick

Most books have a preface or an intro-
duction in which the author tells us
why he wrote the book, what
it's supposed to be about and
which people might be inter-
ested in buying it.

The Golden Land: The Story
of Jewish Irninigration to
America by Rabbi Joseph
Telushkin (Harmony Books)
has neither. It is always dan-
gerous to leave such informa-
tional vacuums, which review-
ers, like me, will jump to fill.
With that in mind, I declare
this book to be a coffee-table
book, with lots of pictures,
cutesy pullouts (more on that
later) and little text. At $29.95 for 29
pages, it must rank as one of the most-
expensive volumes since Gutenberg ush-
ered in the age of printing, and put all
those scribes out of business.
Telushkin, the author, begins by not-
ing that only three days after Spain's
pious rulers King Ferdinand and Queen
Isabella expelled their 200,000 Jewish
subjects in 1492, Columbus set sail for
India. Instead, he and his three ships and
crew (90 members — five of whom were
Mararmos or secret Jews) arrived in the
New World, part of which, the United
States, '`would come to house the largest,
most prosperous and most successful
Jewish community in Diaspora history"
This illustrates, the rabbi writes,
"that at the time of greatest catastro-
phes, God's deliverance is already
being prepared."
The book's last two pages deal with
"What Made the 'Golden Land' Truly
Golden." While there has been anti-
Semitism in America, Telushkin con-
