Don't worry,
we've got plenty
to last for 8 days
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
again with an epilogue. She wants to
tell about trying to find the people who
saved her and then going to Israel with
the daughter of the late family friend
she nominated as a righteous gentile.
"I began to question God during the
war," says Heller, who retained her
hope for the future but broke with
religion for a time.
'After the war, my husband and I
were very angry. Later, we thought we
made a mistake \Nrith our oldest
daughter because we didn't give her a
Jewish education, and we began to
give religious training to the children."
Heller, who now studies Bible every
summer in Israel, expresses religious
commitment as a benefactor for the
United Jewish Appeal's Project
Renewal in Israel, the Benjamin and
Charlotte Gottesfeld Chair in Talmud
at Yeshiva University and the Shaare
Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.
She is very proud to have established
the Fanya Gottesfeld Heller Center for
the Study of Women in Judaism at
Bar-Ilan University in 1998, promot-
ing research and seminars.
"I came to believe in divine justice
because I survived," says Heller, a grand-
mother of eight who lives in New York
City and has served on the boards of the
Jewish Museum, Yeshiva University and
the American Society for Yad Vashem.
"It's easier to believe than not to
believe, and I think there's everything
to gain by being religious. I'm
Orthodox again." O
