Tauber Now Chairs
University Council

Joel Tauber, a philanthropist from
West Bloomfield, has been elected
chairman of the Tel Aviv University
American Council, based in New York
City.
Tauber, the immediate past chair-
man of the executive committee of the
United Jewish Communities (UJC),
has held leadership positions at United
Jewish Appeal, Council of Jewish
Federations, the Jewish Agency for
Israel and the
American Jewish
Joint Distribution
Committee.
In his first move as
national chairman,
Tauber announced
formation of the Tel
Aviv University
International Center
for the Study of
Joel Tauber
Jewish Education
and Identity, a new
international consor-
tium for Jewish education.
Through the center, online courses
will provide high-level Jewish educa-
tion via the Internet to a range of
groups, including unaffiliated Jewish
youth, those attending day and after-
noon schools, high school and college
students and adults wishing to contin-
ue their education.
"I look forward to helping build a
center that will re-define Jewish educa-
tion," Tauber said, "enabling it to
cross physical boundaries as never
before by utilizing multimedia tech-
nology and new, dynamic and exciting
curriculum.
"Helping to shape the next genera-
tion of Jewish leaders is of utmost
importance. This endeavor will permit
me to participate in that process."
University president Itamar
Rabinovich said, "The International
Center will influence the development
and direction of Jewish leadership and
the Jewish community for decades to
come.
"We are grateful for Joel's efforts and
are excited to have such an outstand-
ing individual become an integral part
of the Tel Aviv University."
Education has played a major role in
Tauber's volunteer efforts in the Jewish
community; for example, he initiated
the restructuring of Detroit Jewry's
afternoon schools. In the general com-
munity, he created and endowed the
Tauber Manufacturing Institute at the
University of Michigan.
