MELVIN ELLER, former Detroiter of
Harrisburg, Pa., died Nov. 8, 2002. He
was a general contractor in Pontiac. In
1968, he moved to Harrisburg to operate
the Morrison Labs Inc., a division of
Coopervision Inc. When he retired from
the lab in 1985, he sold commercial real
estate and enjoyed being a counselor for
SCORE and delivering meals on wheels.
He was also a former member of the
Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
During World War II, Mr. Eller served
with the Eighth Air Force; he flew as a
ball turret gunner. He was also a member
of Temple Ohev Shalom, the Blue Ridge
Country Club, the Elks Lodge 810 and
the American Legion Post 292.
Mr. Eller is survived by his wife of 53
years, Dr. Barbara Morison Eller; sons,
Dr. Andrew W. Eller of Pittsburgh, Dr.
Peter M. Eller of Providence, R.I.; daugh-
ter, Amy Weller Scherzer of Tampa, Fla;
seven grandchildren; sister, Charlotte
Levine of West Bloomfield.

DR. LAURENCE A. FREIER, 52, of
Fairfax, Va., died Nov. 7, 2002. He was
an optometrist. Dr. Freier was an avid
runner, biker, hiker and sports enthusiast.
He was also adept in the field of electron-
ics. His memberships included the
American Optometric
Association and the
American Academy of
Optometry.
Dr. Freier is survived
by his sister and broth-
er-in-law, Alice and
Sidney Frank of West
Bloomfield; nieces and
nephew, Michelle,
Darin and Jocelyn
Frank. He was the

late Jeanette Freier.

SELMA FRIEDMAN, 76, of Detroit,
died Nov. 10, 2002. She was a pharmacist
assistant. She was also a volunteer with
the Jewish National Fund, a neighbor-
hood watch volunteer, a member of the
Oak Park Stamp Club and a member of
the Society of Israel Philatelists.
Ms. Friedman is survived by her sisters
and brother-in-law, Eleanor Engberg,
Charlotte and Bill Carpanna; brother,
Henry Friedman of Florida.
Interment at Machpelah Cemetery.

ROBERT GLADSTONE, 74, of Grosse
Pointe, died Nov. 9, 2002. He was the
principal bass player of the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Gladstone was born in New York
City and studied bass privately with
Frederick Zimmermann. He began play-
ing professionally at age 17 and played
with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
under the conductor Fritz Reiner. He
then served with the
New York City Ballet
Orchestra before
beginning a 10-year
engagement with the
New York
Philharmonic. He
joined the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra
in September 1966.
As a teacher, Mr.
Robert
Gladstone was affiliat-

ed with Wayne State
and Oakland universi-
ties. He also lectured at
various universities on his original meth-
ods for teaching double bass and was a
guest speaker at the DSO's pre-concert
lectures. In 1990, he was invited to speak
at Stanford University as part of the cele-
bration, "Boris Pasternak Centennial: A
Soviet-American Conference."
Mr. Gladstone is survived by his wife,
Pamela; daughters, Claudia Kohlman,
Sarah Cohen and Elizabeth Kolar; son, J.
Alexander Dillon and two grandchildren.
