Traverse City Synagogue
Marks Its Fifth Anniversary

Congregation Ahavat Shalom, an
independent synagogue, is mark-
ing its fifth anniversary.
The synagogue was founded in
1997 in Traverse City by commu-
nity leaders and Rabbi Stacie
(Fine) Bahle. Ahavat Shalom's
first president was former
Birmingham resident Lisa Danto.
There are 50 permanent member
families and 350 subscribers to
the newsletter.
The congregation marked its
place in Traverse City with a holi-

day festival on Sept. 27, a move
to new offices and a film on the
Middle East.
A grant from the Kellogg
Foundation earned the synagogue
national recognition with the
opening of,its Midwest Jewish
retreat center. A retreat set for
October with author Rabbi
Tirzah Firestone will be a part of
the anniversary celebration.
Former Detroiter Gary Appel
is the president of the congrega-
tion.
