"It has been my privilege to serve the
Jewish community for 50 years, and my
hope is to serve it for many more to
come," Fisher said to those assembled
for the dedication ceremony. "My heart
has been touched, and although it is
hard to describe the feelings I have, it
means so much for this to be happen-
ing."
Fisher, who cites his participation on a
United Jewish Appeal mission to Israel in
1954 as a seminal experience in his life,
underscored the importance of being for-
ever vigilant to ensure Israel's existence
and survival.
"The struggle is not over, as we read in
the newspapers every day," he said. "You
must all carry on and I will be with you

for Israel; and Eugene
Ribakoff, president, American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee.
Jane Sherman of Franklin, Fisher's
daughter and chairwoman-elect of the
United Israel Appeal, spoke for the
Fisher family.
"He has made us proud," she said.
"He has taught us all to understand
the importance of the Jewish commu-
nity and the importance of our
involvement in it."
After her comments, Sherman
unveiled a plaque inscribed with a quote
from her father in the headquarters now
bearing his name. "We are all trustees of
our Jewish heritage," the plaque reads,
"with an obligation to cherish it,
improve it and guard its future."
