O

fine dancing spot was
the Polish Alliance
on Belmont Street.
Without ques-
tion, though, the
thing to do in
Hamtramck was eat
... and eat well ...
Good old-world
meals were and still are available at
Under the Eagle on Joseph Campau
with blintzes and dumplings made in
the true authentic Polish style ... Same
with the czarina (duck-blood soup).
Meals were inexpensive and robust ...
Zosia's, though harder to find on
Chene, was worth looking for ... It was
nestled above the Round Bar, which
was once a well-known boxing ring ...
Despite the lack of a sign, Zosia's still
did a brisk business with loyal regulars
who appreciated its very representative
sampling of the hearty Polish fare.
Liquor could be brought up from the
Round Bar to drink with your dinner.
Other tried-and-true Hamtramck
spots were the Old Mill Bar and
Restaurant on Conant, where good
perch dinners were the specialty ... and
the Workers' Co-operative Restaurant
on Yemans, which was a remnant of
the city's radical labor history ... The
Workers' Co-operative served highly
acclaimed and filling meals that were
reputed to be the least expensive din-
ners in town.
IF A DECORATING motif that
encroached upon every other aspect of
a restaurant ... the menu, waiter and
general spirit ... appealed to you ... and
especially if you were a railroad buff . 7
then Porter Street Station on Porter in
Detroit was your dream come true.
Guests who also - attended Detroit
Tigers and Red Wings games were often
in attendance ... adding to the jolly old
time one came there to have ... Disco
dancing was on Friday nights ... and an
auxiliary room in the form of a boxcar
took up some of the overflow of diners.
A BODEGA WAS a low-profile
building half underground, where
Spaniards stored their wine while it
came of age ... When tourists came
around to try the wine, the canny
Spanish added restaurants to their
bodegas to feed them.
That bit of history is about all that
was Spanish about the Bodega on
Telegraph in Redford ... Otherwise, it
was a typically all-American place with
its menu ... and crowded waiting bar
or lobby to match ... If you didn't get
claustrophobia in the cramped foyer,
you'd have found the service and the
steak, roast beef and seafood cuisine
pleasantly low-priced. El
