STAR DELI

served you ... The Royal Eagle devel-
oped a faithful following, especially for
its dill pickle soup and duck ... There
was a well-balanced wine list, parking
was free, and piano music on week;-
ends ... All added up to making this a
romantic spot.
A SMALL COZY restaurant on
Whittier in Detroit was one of the few
places that served South American food
and other creative meals designed to
give folks a Latin "rush." ... The fare at
Ruby Taboo's was unique to the Detroit
area, and as such was worth at least one
try ... It continually added new items to
the menu ... with a mixture of Persian
rugs and wicker decor providing the
proper setting for intimate conversation.
IT IS NOT UNUSUAL for a restau-
rant to be named for the street it is on
... But Schweizer Place was named long
after Schweizer's restaurant settled in
there nearly a century-and-a-quarter

This downtown Detroit spot was
one of the first to come to people's
minds when anyone asked about
German food ... it was all there ... the
wiener schnitzel, strudel, dumplings
and the whole calorie and starch-rich
works ... with little or no frills or pre-
tense ... White tablecloths were there,
of course ... what German family
would serve without them?
AFTER OPENING A lot of years
ago ... Sinbad's still continues to pack
in boating folks wearing those rubber-
soled shoes ... with nothing more pre-
tentious than hamburgers, fresh fish
and chili ... Some said it was the
Detroit River that did it, others swear
by the hamburgers ... and still others
said they just felt good ... Whatever it
was and still is, Sinbad's stays high on

the popularity polls with no more out-
side effort than a fresh coat of paint
once in a while ... Non-boaters and out
and out landlubbers continue to get
charged up just munching and watch-
ing the marinas full of bobbing masts.
SURROUNDED BY Detroit,
Hamtramck has been a town where
authentic culture can be found every-
where ... and the atmosphere is invari-
ably friendly.
Years ago, one could get a feel for
being Polish by stepping-into any bar
in town ... there was one on almost
every corner ... to listen to the elderly
men conversing over their shots of
whisky and beer ... and folks ate pick-
led hard-boiled eggs.
The Senate Cafe on Joseph Campau .
was the place to dance or mingle with
the city's finest polka dancers ... Its decor
was plain, but the bands on Friday and
Saturday were top-quality ... Another
