Jerusalem/JTA — Israel arrested a
Hamas cell believed responsible for
several suicide bombings, including
one late last month at Hebrew
University.
The men, eastern Jerusalem resi-
dents whose Israeli ID cards allowed
them to travel the country freely, also
are believed to be behind the Cafe
Moment bombing in March that
killed 11 people. In total, they are
considered responsible for 35 deaths,
including five Americans killed in the
July 31 bombing at the university.
Israel made the arrests Saturday
night, but only recently released the
information. Israeli officials said the
suspects also alerted them to a bomb
planted on the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem
highway. Details of the Hebrew
University bombing were released
along with the disclosure of the arrests.
According to reports, Mohammed
Ouda, a resident of an Arab neighbor-
hood of Jerusalem who worked as a
painter for an Israeli contractor at the
university, planted the bomb. The
night before the attack, Ouda, 29,
jumped the university fence and hid
the bomb in a bag behind a bush,
according to reports.
The following day, he entered cam-
pus using his identity tag and retrieved
the bomb. He planted it inside the
Frank Sinatra cafeteria and covered the
bag with a newspaper. He then left
campus, later setting off the explosive
by remote control.
Emergency Teams
To Get Vaccine
Jerusalern/JTA — Israel will vaccinate
some 15,000 security and rescue per-
sonnel against smallpox.
The Security Cabinet decided to
adopt the Health Ministry's recom-
mendation to vaccinate police, rescue
teams and other personnel who would
be part of a first response to any bio-
logical weapons attack from Iraq. The
decision was made amid assessments
that Saddam Hussein might use chem-
ical or biological weapons against
Israel if the United States attacks Iraq.
Several hundred personnel already
have been vaccinated as part of an effort
to produce antidotes. The Health
Ministry recommended against inoculat-
ing the entire population for the time
being because of the vaccines side effects.
Bear Kills Girl
In Catskills
New York/JTA — A 5-month-old
Chasidic girl was killed by a bear
while vacationing with her family in
the Catskills. Esther Schwimmer was
snatched from her stroller by the bear
and dragged to death in a bungalow
community of Orthodox Jews. Her
mother took two other children to
safety, and by the time she came back
for Esther, it was too late. The 150-
pound black bear was later shot and
killed by a local police officer.
Czech President Sees
Flooded Jewish Sites
Prague/JTA — Czech President
Vaclav Havel visited several historic
Jewish sites in Prague damaged by
recent flooding.
Havel expressed sympathy for the
Jewish community while touring the
13th century Old-New Synagogue
and the Pinkas Synagogue.
Both sites took in several feet of
water, and experts are still examining
the extent of the damage.
Meanwhile, the basement of
Dresden's new synagogue was flood-
ed, but the sanctuary was still dry
and Torah scrolls had been secured.
Money To Help
Israeli Schools
New York/JTA — Some $20 million
raised by North American Jewry will
go to improve security in Israeli
schools this year. The money was
raised by the United Jewish
Communities, the central fund-rais-
ing arm for North American federa-
tions, as part of the Israel Emergency
Campaign to help Israel during the
ongoing intifada (uprising).
N.Y. City Council:
Boot Out The P.A.
New York/JTA — New York's City
Council overwhelmingly approved a
resolution Aug. 15 to shut down the
Palestinian mission to the United
Nations in Manhattan.
Because the City Council lacks the
authority to close the office, the bill
calls on President Bush to work with
the United Nations to do so —
which many insiders deem highly
