Beth El Honors 6 Congregants

Outgoing Temple Beth El President
Alan A. May honored six congregants at
the temple's annual meeting in June
with the presentation of the President's
Cup. The cup is given annually to an
individual or individuals in recognition
of length of service and devotion to the
congregation. Honored were Jill and
Howard Gurwin, Carol and Michael
Ziecik, Karen and the late David Hull,
Dr. Jill Syme and Elizabeth May.
The Gurwins, chairs of the member-
ship committee, were thanked for their
contributions to the temple's growth
and for opening their home to new
members for meet-and-greet events
with temple staff and officers. Howard
Gurwin is a member of the board of
trustees. Jill, a sisterhood vice president
and co-chair of sisterhood's Party
Planning Showcase, also co-chairs the
temple's Yom Kippur Break Fast and
chaired the congregational seder.
Carol Ziecik, a member of the board
of Trustees and co-chair of the art com-
mittee, was instrumental in acquiring
the antiquities that comprise the temple's
mosaic tile fund raiser. She is involved in
the second phase of the project, the con-
struction of a permanent display for the
tiles. Michael sits on the investment
committee and serves as a fund-raising
adviser to various other committees. The
daughter of past Temple President Mert
Segal, Carol was lauded for continuing
the family tradition of service to the
congregation and for passing on that tra-
dition to her children, Lacey Jacobson

Ann Arbor Plans
Apples & Honey

The Jewish Community Center
of Washtenaw County in Ann
Arbor will host Apples and
Honey 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug.
25. Chairs for the event are
Haran and Laurie Rashes.
Admission is free.
New this year will be the Ben
Yehudah Israel Shopping Expo,
with booths representing Ben
Yehudah Street merchants sell-
ing Israeli art, crafts and other
commodities.
To volunteer to help at the
expo, for information or to reg-
ister, call (734) 971-0990.

and M. Cooper and Jane Ziecik.
Brotherhood president prior to his
death in an auto accident this spring,
David Hull was also a temple usher
and, with his wife, Karen, co-chair of
the library committee. A former sis-
terhood recording secretary and vice
president and a current member of
the sisterhood board, Karen has con-
tinued as library chair. Her children,
Sarah, Aaron and Jessica, joined her
in accepting the cup.
A co-leader of the Sisterhood for
the Soul series and co-facilitator of the
Bereavement Support Group, Dr. Jill
Syme, wife of Rabbi Syme, was laud-
ed as a leader in her own right. With
Rabbi Syme, she led the Children
Estranged From Their Parents:
Personal & Jewish Perspectives series.
She also brought the Initiation with
Josef and a Kabbalah course to the
temple. Dr. Syme represents the con-
gregation on Synagogue 2000.
May's final presentation went to his
wife, Liz May, in appreciation for her
support during his presidency and for
the establishment of a library program
at Glazer Elementary School in
Detroit. The library program is part
of the congregation's ongoing relation-
ship with the school; volunteers work
with young readers weekly and the
congregation's book drive provides
volumes for the school library and
books for graduating fifth graders.
They now staff the school's previously
closed library twice a week.
