Winship Holds School Clean-Up

The Friends of Winship invites alumni
and friends of Alfred E. Winship
Elementary in Detroit to join at the
school for a daylong clean-up/fix-up
program Sunday, July 28.
The newly formed Friends of
Winship will meet at 10 a.m. to paint
lockers, plant flowers, rebuild the
school's greenhouse, reorganize the
library and clean-up the facility.
The group is seeking donations for a
school wish list, with items ranging
from computers and furniture to clean-

ing supplies and paint. They have con-
ducted a book drive and will donate
several hundred books to the students.
Facilitated by the Detroit Jewish
Coalition for Literacy (DJCL), the
group began volunteering at the school
in June, tutoring at-risk third- and
fifth-grade students in the mandatory
summer school program. For informa-
tion about the Friends of Winship or
the clean-up/fix-up day at the school,
contact Phyllis Shawn Jarvis, (248)
