Birmingham's Shelli Weisberg
Seeks 40th State House Seat

Editor's Note: Jewish candidates seeking
elective office this year are welcome to
announce their candidacy in the Jewish
News. Shelli Weisberg is running against
Democrat John D. McClary in the Aug.
6 primary. Republican candidates are
Beverly Brode, Ara Alexander
Kachadourian, Bill McMaster, Jim
Talpos, Shelley Goodman Taub and
Chris Winans.

was named a "Diversity Champion" by
the Birmingham-Bloomfield Task
Force on Race Relations and Diversity.
"Shelli Weisberg is a needed advo-
cate and an important voice for educa-
tion," said John Hoeffler, Birmingham
schools superintendent. "We need her
in the Michigan House of
Representatives."
An advocate for gun safety and con-
trol, Weisberg joined mothers and
others in the Million Mom March in
Washington, D.C. She contends that
we must be smart about security and
safety while maintaining our civil
rights. She argues that abortion must
be kept legal, safe and available and
will fight to reverse the erosion of
"choice" she believes the current legis-
lature perpetuates.
"A woman's choice to either contin-
ue or terminate a pregnancy should be
between her, her family, and her
health care adviser," said Weisberg,
who donates time to the American
Civil Liberties Union.
She supports dealing conscientiously
with the looming budget deficit, and
supports the separation of church and
state. She also recognizes the need to
strengthen health care, and wants to
preserve the environment, keep a cli-
mate conducive to business, return
local control and allow judicial review
in sentencing.
Weisberg is endorsed by Planned
Parenthood, Michigan Conference-
National Organization for Women,
the Million Moms, the Detroit Free
Press, the 11th Congressional District
Democratic Committee, state Sen.
Gary Peters, and state Reps. Gilda
Jacobs, Dave Woodward and Jack
Minore.
She and her husband, Mickey, have
four children. To contact her, call

Sparked by concerns that conservative
agendas are shaping politics in
Michigan, Shelli Weisberg, seeking the
open state representative seat in the
40th district, realized she wanted to
create change.
"I believe it
is my duty to
be involved
and I know I
can be a posi-
tive force,"
Weisberg said.
"It is a very
important time
in the history
of our country.
The foundation
of our democ-
racy is being
chipped away." Shelli Weisberg
A
Birmingham
resident for 16
years, Weisberg holds a master's degree
in finance and a bachelor's degree in
business administration. She complet-
ed Michigan State University's political
leadership program to which she
received a fellowship. She now serves
on the Birmingham Board of
Education.
She also is lobbying at the state and
national level and is serving on state
board of education committees with a
focus on early childhood education
and agency cooperation to provide
services to families in need.
Weisberg fought against school
tuition vouchers in 2000 and works
