dents. At times, they even admit this,
as in the case of Andrew Ross, the
then Princeton University English
professor who boasted in 1990 that he
was using his position at the
Princeton, N.J., university to radical-
ize "the children of the ruling class."
Not surprisingly, some anti-Israel
groups interpret the faculty actions as
implicit permission to harass Jewish
and pro-Israel students. The result has
been a wave of verbal and physical
attacks.
• At San Francisco State University,
anti-Israel students physically threat-
ened students marching for Israel
while shouting phrases like "Die you
racist pigs" and "Hitler should have
finished the job." This prompted the
president of the university to admit
that he was never "as deeply distressed
and angered by something that hap-
pened on this campus" during his 14
years there. Even after this incident,
pro-Palestinian students continued to
use a SFSU-owned Web page to
engage in Holocaust denial and accuse
Jews of ritual murder.
• At University of California at
Berkeley, anti-Israel students occupied
a classroom building. That led to the
arrest of 79 students, including one
later charged with a felony for biting a
police officer.
•At University of Colorado at
Boulder, students desecrated an Israeli
flag and chalked anti-Semitic slogans
on the main campus walkway. At the
University of Illinois in Champaign,

But what I will really remember is
the spirit of the average Israeli. They
epitomize grace under fire.
I learned that, in tragic contrast to
their Arab neighbors and despite nearly
two years of terror designed to demor-
alize and destroy them, Israelis almost
uniformly wish not for victory, but for
peace. Not for revenge, but for com-
promise and reconciliation with a will-
ing peace partner — if only there was
one. Not to hurt others, but to build a
better society. Not for their children to
hate, but to work to be better people.
Not to spread lies to win sympathy for
their cause, but to enhance under-
standing and honesty so that everyone
might benefit and improve.

Even when the very tragic events of
late — the almost daily attacks of ter-

Therefore, when my father arrived
the following morning at his small fac-
tory in neighboring Arab Jaffa, he was

terrorize them. One piece of graffiti in
Hadera summed it up: Ein lanu aretz
aheret. Meaning: "We don't have
another country."
• To many places where I was remind-
ed how small Israel is — in fact, from a
modest vantage point almost anywhere,
you can see out of the country.
All these and our other activities were
important and I won't forget them.
