Although professors teaching
Middle East-related courses are the
most responsible for this degeneration
on campus, others too are complicit.
By indulging the Middle East special-
ists' radicalism and efforts at indoctri-
nation, alumni, administrators, par-
ents, state legislators, department of
education officials and other faculty
effectively condone those activities.
The time has come for all these
stakeholders to take back the universi-
ties as institutions of civilized discourse.
This means ending the now-regnant
atmosphere of extremism and intimida-
tion. The place to start is by condemn-
ing and curbing the leftist activism that
too often passes in America today for
Middle East scholarship. ❑

ing that the people of whom we are a
part have kept their courage under
terrifying fire, and their humanity
under inhumane conditions.
Do the right thing and support Israel
in any way you can. Read the Jerusalem
Post, the Jewish News and other sources
like the Wall Street Journal and watch
Fox News (but definitely not other
sources that, in the name of "evenhand-
edness," equate the firefighter with the
arsonist) every day to educate yourself.
Then spread your knowledge.
Speak with your friends and co-work-
ers. Write letters and make phone calls
to newspapers and politicians. Buy
Israeli products when you can, includ-
ing over the Internet. Contribute
money if you can afford to. Travel to
Israel if you can. We can't sit idly by at
this time and fume quietly to ourselves
while the rest of the world seems to be
going crazy. As someone once said, "It's
better to light a candle than to curse the
darkness." ❑

KAPEN from page 29

Palestinians, both having a justified
claim to the land in their own beliefs,
have any intention of disappearing.
Sooner or later, they are bound to sit
again at the negotiating table, hope-
fully this time in earnest, and find a
just solution to the conflict.
Yet, as sure and confident as I am as to
the justice of. my own cause, I am also
well aware of the fact. that these convic-
tions would have differed I 80 degrees if
I were born a Palestinian Arab.
