was presented to the Borsands, who are
grandparents of three Darchei Torah stu-
dents. Gerald Borsand, president and
chief executive officer of Knight Drug
Company, is a board member of
Darchei Torah. He and his wife, Eileen,
are strong supporters of Jewish day
school education and, in fact, have
grandchildren in each of the local day
schools in this community.
Dr. Chanan Kroll, Darchei Torah
president, expressed appreciation to the
school staff, and also to the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit for
its support. This is Darchei Torah's first
year as a beneficiary agency of
Federation, and Kroll thanked
Federation "for believing in our role as a
true community school." He also singled
out Penny Blumenstein, Federation's
'immediate past
president, for
her leadership
in establishing
the Jewish
Education
Trust to fund
day school
education in
metro Detroit.
Rabbi
Alex Saltsman
Yitzchok
Kahan, who
delivered the
evening's dvar
Torah (Torah
lesson) noted
that Darchei
Torah excels in
the effect it has
on students
beyond the
classroom. He
called it a
"total life com- Eileen and Gerald
Borsand
mitment" to
Judaism,
which the children absorb from their
studies and school activities.
Beyond academic excellence (100 per-
cent of last year's first girls' graduating
class received both MEAP and Michigan
Competitive Scholarships, for instance),
the school is active in chesed (kindness)
outreach to the greater Jewish communi-
ty. Among their activities, the Darchei
students visit nursing homes on a weekly
basis, volunteer with the Berkley-based
Yad Ezra kosher food bank and help
Jewish Family Service's homebound
clients.
Said honoree Gerald Borsand:
"Yeshivas Darchei Torah is doing an
exemplary job in educating Jewish chil-
dren. Schools like Darchei Torah ensure
the existence and the future of the
Jewish People."
