ter and seafood bar with fish tacos,
seafood, chowders, etc.
In the Grand Mall came Kruse &
Muer Grand Blanc in 1996 ... a 165-seat
restaurant with wide varieties of home-
made foods, fresh fish, seafood and steaks.
Now has come Kruse & Muer At
The Lake that opened this January ...
on S. Lapeer Road in Lake Orion ... in
an 1860 former farmhouse made into a
restaurant around the early 1900s ...
From the early 1950s to the early
1980s, it operated as the noted Gus'
Steak House, owned by Gus Kalohn
a short while as Uptown Steak House
... and then was taken over by Danny
Vanelli, who renamed it Vanelli's Gus's
Steakhouse ... His father, Sam Vanelli,
and uncles Joe and Al, were the owners
of Vanelli's on Woodward and Six Mile.
The new Kruse & Muer At The Lake
overlooks Lake Orion ... and is a com-
pletely remodeled facility ... with a
relaxing and comfortable setting that
includes field stone fireplaces, earth-
tone colors, natural wood floors ... and
custom light fixtures and metal sculp-
tures by Peter Loren, executive corpo-
rate chef and director of development of
Epoch Restaurants, whose talents are far
and away not restricted to the kitchen.
Peter's excellent design ability takes
in 3-foot-high steel, knife, fork and
spoon sconces with aluminum and
copper mesh shades, 6-foot steel "cat-
o-nine tails" coat racks with broad
leaves separating each booth in the
front dining room, flamed copper
sconces with knife and fork detail in
the back dining room, chrome "cock-
tail shaker" and cocktail glass sconces
in the bar area ... and posts adorned
with birds made from knifes, forks
and spoons.
Traditional Kruse and Muer signa-
ture dishes are, of course, on the menu
... but additional items too that have
been winning over a lot of taste buds.
Executive Chef Matt Foyteck, com-
pleted studies at the Culinary Institute
of America at Hyde Park, N.Y. ... and
is highly respected in epicurean circles
for his creativeness.
Even little things like butter and corn
oil margarine on the table are not over-
looked ... Each by themselves in separate
dishes ... and as at all Kruse & Muer
restaurants, its tasty homemade bread
loaf is brought fresh before all orders.
Both lunch and dinner are served ...
Monday through Friday lunch, 11 to
4 ... and Saturday, noon to 4 ...
Dinners are Monday-Thursday, 4 to 9;
