A panel of area educators will be the
featured speakers on Wednesday, May
8, at a Detroit Jewish Coalition for
Literacy (DJCL) workshop for princi-
pals, volunteers and coordinators 4-6
p.m. at the Max M. Fisher Federation
Building in Bloomfield Township.
Staff reading specialist Suzanne
Hanskech from Southfield's MacArthur
Elementary School will share the suc-
cess of the Jewish Community
Council-Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's joint involve-
ment in MacArthur's lunchtime literacy
room and as weekly tutors.
Southfield's Kennedy Elementary
School principal Diana Kirkland, along
with several staff members, will instruct
participants on strategies for developing
a successful literacy volunteer program.
DJCL coordinators and volunteers,
including Council board member
Micki Grossman, will offer insights for
improving communication with school
staff and maximizing volunteers'
efforts. Grossman serves as a Jewish
Family Service literacy volunteer at
Southfield's Kennedy School and
Detroit's Crary Elementary School.
Chaired by Council board members
Ellie Slovis and Sally Jo Levine, the
DJCL is an affiliate of the National
Jewish Coalition for Literacy.

The Jewish Community Center in Oak
Park will host Project Healthy Living,
in cooperation with Detroit Medical
Center/Sinai Grace, United Health
Organization, the-United Way and
WXYZ, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday,
May 8.
Available tests free of charge include
height and weight, blood pressure,
vision screening, body fat analysis, pul-
monary function tests, medication
information, nutrition counseling, glau-
coma screening, health education infor-
mation and displays, podiatry, choles-
terol checking, counseling and referral.
The following tests will be available at
a nominal fee: blood panel, prostate
specific antigen (PSA for men), cancer
antigen (CA-125 for women), colorec-
tal cancer screening kit, h. pylori blood
test (screens for ulcers, stomach ail-
ments), bone density test and stroke
screening.
