tive officer of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit: "I think it is
very, very sad. I feel for him. I feel for
his family. I. think he makes a tremen-
dous contribution to this community
in many, many ways. Ilope he gets
over this ... and gets back to what he
does best, working for the communi-
ty. ,,
Taubman has also been a generous
donor to ptiblic institutions like the
Detroit Institute of Arts, the College
of Creative Studies in Detroit and
the University of Michigan. He gave
$30 million to the U-M College of
Architecture and Urban Planning,
and the university has named the A.
Alfred Taubman Health Center and
the Taubman Medical Library in his
honor.
He- also is donor of the Taubman
Center for Public Policy and
American Institutions at Brown
University in Providence, R.I. He also
sponsors the Taubman Fellowship,
which provides elected officials the
opportunity to study for three weeks
at the John F. Kennedy School of
Goverment at Harvard University.
Burton Farbman, chairman of the
Southfield-based Farbman Group real
estate company, worked with
Taubman in the development of the
third Riverfront Apartments tower in
downtown Detroit.
"Alfred Taubman has so many
friends in Detroit who respect him,"
Farbman said. He is a wonderful
person, and not just as a philanthro-
pist, although he has given tens of
millions away. People really care
about this man ... we all feel this
miserable blemish [on Taubman],
and we all feel it.for him. It does
not change our feelings for him.
"With all the success he had, and
despite the many opportunities it
provided, he never turned_ his back
on our city. And we will never turn
our back on him." PI
