RINKE CADILLAC

85 Years

very visible to everybody, making him
an example.
"The judge did not give weight to
the great extraordinary contributions
Taubman has made to society for so
many years before this alleged crimi-
nal activity occurred. This philanthropy
wasn't just in the local Jewish commu-
nity, he was also a philanthropist on a
national scale," Liss said.
"By the judge making an example
of him, making him a poster child as
it were ... he disregarded Taubman's
philanthropy, his medical condition,
his age and his record of civic duty
and civic contribution," said Liss.
Taubman's medical woes include
heart problems, diabetes and hyper-
tension.
Taubman is the shopping center
magnate whose Taubman Centers
Inc., a real estate investment trust,
developed and managed the following
regional shopping centers: Twelve
Oaks in Novi, Lakeside in Sterling
Heights, Fairlane in Dearborn,
Briarwood in Ann Arbor and Great
Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills,
among others across the country. He
stepped down as chairman of
Taubman Centers last year. His son
Robert is president and chief execu-
tive officer of the company his father
founded in 1950.
Taubman, whose worth is estimated
at $770 million, has given more than
$100 million to the arts, medicine,
education and communal charities;
$20 million of that has gone to the
Jewish community, according to
Tennyson.

Local Philanthropy

Taubman is a generous giver to the
Jewish Federation's Annual Campaign.
In appreciation of his gifts to the
Detroit Jewish community, the Jewish
Community Campus in Oak Park was
named for him. In addition, there is a
Taubman-Fisher Memorial Park in
Jerusalem named after both Taubman
and Detroit-area businessman and
philanthropist Max Fisher.
Said Sharona Shapiro, Michigan
Area director of American Jewish
Committee: "Alfred Taubman has
been instrumental in the strengthen-
ing of our physical as well as our
social infrastructure within the Jewish
community. His effort and financial
resources have gone toward rebuilding
and refinancing buildings that have
served the Jewish community as well
as having underwritten programs that
are so necessary for our community."
Said Robert Aronson, chief execu-
