One of the most powerful
moments of the evening came after
all the memorial candles were lit, and
a moment of silence was observed for
all the fallen soldiers and civilians. As
heads were bowed throughout the
sanctuary, an air raid siren was sound-
ed to remind all those present of the
violence that their fellow Jews in
Israel have endured. A palpable chill
went through the crowd, despite the
. - 80-degree temperature.
Rabbi Daniel Nevins of Mat
Shalom Synagogue in Farmington
Hills, who came to the program
directly upon his return from the
national solidarity Israel rally in
Washington, D.C., received a standing
ovation from the enthusiastic crowd.
"You could feel the energy and fer-
vor that he brought back with him,"
said Sam Herman.
Several Israelis in the crowd
expressed their appreciation for the
strong show of support by the
Detroit Jewish community.
"It's so tough in Israel right now,
said Sharon Stay, who had traveled
from her home in Haifa to celebrate
her grandson's bar mitzvah. "People
are dying every day. A gathering like
this makes me very proud; it makes
a difference to us."
Ziva Schechet, born in Israel and
now living in Southfield, said: "No
_eremony in the -.world will ever really
express the depth of the pain felt by
the parents of our fallen soldiers. I am
moved to see such a great response
from American Jews. It's critical for
the Israeli soldiers and civilians to feel
that they're not alone." El
March 28. Countdown receipts are ear-
marked for Israelis victimized by terror.
The Emergency Campaign runs par-
allel to Federation's 2002 Annual
Campaign, which formally closes April
28. The Emergency Campaign hopes
to raise $5 million to lift the Annual
Campaign to $30 million and $1.4
million to lift the Emergency
Campaign to $5 million.
"We cannot go to Israel and pick up
arms and fight alongside our brothers
and sisters in the IDF (Israel Defense
Forces)," Jackier said to the crowd. "We
can only do what we can do. But what
we can do is very powerful, and that is
to relieve the pain and suffering that the
people of Israel have been experiencing
— the victims of terror, the elderly, chil-
dren who can't go to school because
they cannot walk the streets in safety.
"For those of us who are able, we
can write a check." ❑
