lac

ore than 3,000 Detroit-
area Jews gathered for a
Yorn HaZikamn commem-
oration program at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield to show
their support for Israel and to come
together as a community.
"It was wonderful to see how, on
such short notice, our Jewish commu-
nity showed such an outpouring of
support," said Sam Herman of
Farmington Fiills. "The best part for
me was walking into Shaarey Zedek
and seeing the crowds corning from all
directions to make their way there."
Carol Kaczander of Oak Park was
there as both a concerned Jew and in
her capacity as senior campaign asso-
ciate for the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit.
"The tremendous turnout really ,
demonstrates people's desire to relate
to Israel," said 1(aczander. "But I'd be
here anyway because my heart bleeds
for Israel and its people."
Despite the weeknight constraints
of homework and early bedtimes,
many parents felt it was important to
attend with their children.
"It was a small thing we can do for
our brothers and sisters in Israel, to
take an hour out of our lives and

tinuing to defend Israel, to fight ter-
rorism and to seek peace."
"Israel is facing tough times, but it
has a bright future," Snir concluded.
"We are a nation with deep roots and
a very long history. We overcame
many difficulties in the past and we
will overcome this one as well.
`We shall win this war because we
are right and because we are strong."
We will win, he said, 'because justice
will prevail at the end of the day."

Expression Of Support

Speaking directly to Snir, Jackier said
the Jewish community was with Israel.
"We are with you not only because
of our distinctive desire to be a sup-
porter of that precious piece of real
estate in the Middle East, the State of
Israel, but we are with you because we
understand that the dimensions of

bring our families here," said Helaine
Kaplan of Bloomfield Hills.
Her 10-year-old son Jeremy was
glad to participate. It made me feel'
like I'm a part of Israel," he said.
"I was impressed by the number of
people who showed up," said Rob
Starkman of Beverly Hills. "I think it
was very positive for the IDF (Israeli
Defense Forces) people who were
there; they could really come away
knowing that the Detroit Jewish com-
munity is behind them. Even though
our community sometimes has a ten-
dency to bicker about unimportant
things, for something this important
we are all on the same page."
Starkrnan attended with his son
Charlie, 11, who sang in the Shaarey
Zedek choir as part of the program.
"It opened up a nice discussion
between the two of us on the way
home," Starkman said He had the
chance to ask about the significance
of the day, especially as it relates to
our own family because we have a lot
of relatives in Israel."
Elana Nachman of Birmingham
summed it up perfectly. "There are so
many reasons to show our strong
community support for Israel, but the
most important onels that we have
to provide a future world for our chil-
dren. Where will they be if we don't
stand up for ourselves now?"

what is happening today in the world
goes far beyond simply a regional dis''
puce between Israel and the
Palestinians," he said. "What we are
experiencing is no less than an assaul:
on the Jewish people."
He also announced other Israel-
related events, including a "Stand for
Israel Shabbat" at local synagogues di!
weekend, and a major community-
wide solidarity rally event on April
time and place to be announced.
More than $100,000 was raised
Monday toward Federation's "Thirty
Days of Solidarity Israel Emergency
Campaign" of one-time gifts, ranging
from a $25,000 pledge to a broken ,
piggy bank with $20.57, said a
Federation spokesperson. So far, $4.9
million has been raised toward the yea :
long Emergency Campaign goal of $6
million; $1.3 million has been raised
since the 30-day countdown began
