quickly. We still owe over $5,000 for the
loan we took to pay for Mishca's adop-
tion and another $5,000 for a loan to
cover medical expenses.
"A lot of our medical expenses are cov-
ered through the Children's Special
Health Care program and our insurance,
but we're always taken aback when we're
denied coverage for a test or for a specif-
ic treatment. For instance, Mischa was
very angry with his condition and we
started taking him to a child psycholo-
gist to help him get through all this.
Our insurance denied payment. We
couldn't continue the treatment because
we also had to think about our other
two children."
Fifteen-year-old Samantha and 9-year-
old Jacob are patient and caring with
Mischa. Marilyn and Richard have
adjusted to the young boy's mood
swings and early hours. Financially, the
family continues to struggle. Spiritually,
they've grown stronger.

Health Notes

Dr. Allen Stawis of Oak Park is the
new medical director of the Webber
Cancer Center of St. John Macomb
Hospital. He is the principal inves-
tigator for St. John Hospital to the
Michigan Cancer Research consor-
tium and serves as a medical oncol-
ogy consultant for Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Michigan.

Dr. Michael D. Seidman of West
Bloomfield has been appointed
medical director of Henry Ford
Health System's Center for
Complementary and Integrative
Medicine. Certified in otolaryngol-
ogy, Dr. Seidman is considered an
expert on the molecular basis of
aging, noise-induced hearing loss,
otologic/neurologic skull base
injuries and tinnitus. Dr. Robert A.
Levine of Farmington Hills has
been appointed research director for
the center. He is known for
research on premature nerve cell
death in the brain and Parkinson's
disease. Denise Jacob of Franklin is
a registered nurse who has been
named administrative manager of
the center. Her special interests
include complementary in integra-
tive medicine, bioethics and end-of-
