RUTHAN BRODSKY
Special to the Jewish New
W
e feel very blessed to have
Mischa in our family," says
Marilyn Dresser of Bay
City. "I know that if he
gets the chance, he'll live a good life.
"But now, he can't put on his own
jacket. The chemotherapy caused a neu-
ropathy to his hinds and feet. He's going
to need intense therapy once the treat-
ments are completed."
A story about 5-year-old Mikhail
Robert Dresser appeared in the Jewish
News 17 months ago. The Dressers had
struggled to adopt Mishca from Russia;
six months later, they learned their
adopted . son had a brain tumor.
Today, Mischca's biggest wish is to ride
a bike again and to be able to run. He
Mikhail Dresser
wears special braced boots to help him
regain a normal walking gait and at night
he wears splints.
Often suffering from headaches, stom-
ach cramps, balance -difficulties and leg
pain, Mischca gets frustrated easily. He
frequently wakes the entire family in the
middle of the night.
"Part of the problem is that it takes so
long for him to go through a chemother-
apy treatment," explains Marilyn. "He
needs nine complete cycles and is now
only in cycle 6. Right after the first arti-
cle was written, he had a bad reaction to
the chemotherapy and couldn't walk for
eight months. We carried him and had a
special stroller made for him."
The little boy was hospitalized several
times in February 2000 due to infections
in his central line (brovia). He also devel-
oped shingles. Different types of
chemotherapy were administered.
By the end of last May, just before the
school year ended, Mischa attended a
program for the physic-illy frail in Bay
City for two hours a day. Today, he goes
to a young 5 kindergarten for a few
hours a day, several days a week — with
assistance. He receives speech, occupa-
tional and physical therapy from the
school district.
"We are fortunate that the Jewish
community, through the local federation,
is covering our travel costs when we take
Mishca to the hospital" in Ann Arbor,
says Marilyn. "It's not just the fuel
expense, but it's the charges for staying
