The Conservative movement of metro
Detroit will host Dr. Ismar Schorsch,'
chancellor of the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America,
7 p.m. Monday, March
4, at Adat Shalom
Synagogue and 7:30
p.m. Tuesday, March
5, at Congregation
Beth Shalom.
The two-part series
will address the issue
Rabbi Schorsch
of spirituality and
scholarship in light of
the recent publication of Etz Hayim, the
new Conservative Torah translation.
His remarks for March 4 are titled
"The Place of Scholarship in Our
Religious Lives;" for March 5, "From
Hertz Chumash to Etz Hayim:
Conservative Judaism and the Torah."
Both evenings are open to the commu-
nity at no charge.
Dr. Schorsch will explore how Jewish
spirituality is rooted in the Torah. He
will examine how new insights from
modern archaeology to anthropology
have enhanced understanding of the
central text of Judaism. Annually, Dr.
Schorsch selects one community from
around the country to deliver a major
address on a significant issue of the day.
Since being appointed the sixth chan-
cellor of JTS in 1986, Dr. Schorsch
made Jewish education his and JTS's top
priority. His most recent book,Frorn Text
to Context: The Turn to History in
Modern Judaism, was recently translated
into Hebrew and published in Israel. For
information, call the Detoit JTS office,
(248)258-0055.
