the feelings of his wife, Sherry, who has
become very active with Temple Israel,
and his older daughter, Jaime, who is
about to complete her law studies at
Harvard.
The Courtney Lisa Cantor Memorial
Scholarship Fund is a further tribute
established by the family and adminis-
tered by Temple Israel. It sends recipients
to Israel in the same way Courtney
chose to travel, with a group of people
she did not know before the trip.
"A few of the (scholarship winners)
actually knew Courtney, and that brings
a very personal touch," explains Cantor,
whose family has no say in the scholar-
ship selection process.
"Her trip to Israel was an important
part of Courtney's growth. She felt a
sense of accomplishment going over
there with a group she didn't know and
then coming back with new friends, a
deep affection for (the country) and an
added
awareness of her own Jewish iden-
tity. ,,

Cantor, who also describes his battle
with cancer in the aftermath of his
daughter's death, is pleased that he con-
tinues to hear from Courtney's large
group of friends and receives letters from
strangers who relate his writing to events
in their own lives.
"They have not lost a child, but they
have school-age children living at home
or starting college," explains Cantor,
who urges parents to prepare college
freshmen for the peer pressure that per-
vades campuses. "They have taken the
lessons I have tried to impart to heart,
and that's the best thing that could hap-
pen with this book.
"The best thing that was said to me
had to do with never getting over some-
thing like this, but instead getting used
to it. We're used to it now and deal with
it the best we can, but that's an ongoing
process." ❑
