The Courtney Lisa Cantor Memorial Scholarship Fund is a further tribute established by the family and adminis- tered by Temple Israel. It sends recipients to Israel in the same way Courtney chose to travel, with a group of people she did not know before the trip. "A few of the (scholarship winners) actually knew Courtney, and that brings a very personal touch," explains Cantor, whose family has no say in the scholar- ship selection process. "Her trip to Israel was an important part of Courtney's growth. She felt a sense of accomplishment going over there with a group she didn't know and then coming back with new friends, a deep affection for (the country) and an added awareness of her own Jewish iden- tity. ,, What's on your plate March 14? Cantor, who also describes his battle with cancer in the aftermath of his daughter's death, is pleased that he con- tinues to hear from Courtney's large group of friends and receives letters from strangers who relate his writing to events in their own lives. "They have not lost a child, but they have school-age children living at home or starting college," explains Cantor, who urges parents to prepare college freshmen for the peer pressure that per- vades campuses. "They have taken the lessons I have tried to impart to heart, and that's the best thing that could hap- pen with this book. "The best thing that was said to me had to do with never getting over some- thing like this, but instead getting used to it.
