Council of Oakland County
held its sixth Circle of Friends
event Jan. 17, at Glen Oaks
Country Club in Farmington Hills.
More than 250 patrons attended the
event featuring keynote speaker Dave
Pelzer, author of many bestsellers,
including The Lost Boy and A Man

Named Dave.
Pelzer mesmerized the crowd with his
childhood stories of survival. "When
you almost die six times before the age
of 12, you really appreciate life," said
Pelzer, who had an alcoholic mother.
His teachers and counselors rescued
him, and he was put in a foster home.
He talked about focusing on the positive
and turning adversity into triumph. His
book Help Yourself is a call to "finding
.
hope, courage and happiness."
Carole Larson Wendzel was the event
chairman and Rich Fisher was the mas-
ter of ceremonies. Some of the Circle of
Friends patrons included Maddee
Adelson, Harriet Alpem, Doris August,
Shelly Cooper, Elyse Essick Foltyn,
