CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ Local Columnist T he Child and Abuse Neglect Council of Oakland County held its sixth Circle of Friends event Jan. 17, at Glen Oaks Country Club in Farmington Hills. More than 250 patrons attended the event featuring keynote speaker Dave Pelzer, author of many bestsellers, including The Lost Boy and A Man Named Dave. Pelzer mesmerized the crowd with his childhood stories of survival. "When you almost die six times before the age of 12, you really appreciate life," said Pelzer, who had an alcoholic mother. His teachers and counselors rescued him, and he was put in a foster home. He talked about focusing on the positive and turning adversity into triumph. His book Help Yourself is a call to "finding . hope, courage and happiness." Carole Larson Wendzel was the event chairman and Rich Fisher was the mas- ter of ceremonies.
