A Life Together

With Ruth's help, Redstone has pub-
lished several significant architectural
books: Public Art, New Dimensions in
Shopping Centers and Stores, The New
Downtowns, Rebuilding Business Districts
and his autobiography.
"My main purpose in writing these
books was to advance my belief in the
importance of humanizing and improv-
ing our living environment,” Redstone
said.
His wife, Ruth Rosenbaum
Redstone, whose shared interests and
civic projects matched his own ideals
and goals, has enhanced Redstone's
career.
When they married, Ruth worked as
a Jewish Social Service Bureau case-
worker. She subsequently became presi-
dent of the Women's Division of the
Greater Detroit Interfaith Round Table,
president of the Women's Division of
the American Jewish Congress and
president of the League of Jewish
Women's Organizations of
Metropolitan Detroit. She is a charter
member of the Jewish Parents Institute
at the JCC.
In 1974, she received the Heart of
Gold award from the United Way
Foundation for her volunteer work.
Ruth sums up her husband's work as
inspiration for her own need to volun-
teer and improve the world.
"Lou has given his whole life to mak-
ing the world a better place physically.

I have tried to make my immediate
world a better place socially," she said.
Both Redstones have been named
patrons of the Technion Institute of
Technology in Haifa. On their many
trips to Israel, they have watched with
delight the new Technion Institute
being constructed on Mt. Carmel.
Not only did Redstone work as a
chalutz on the construction of the orig-
inal building in Haifa, but he also was
one of the founders of the Detroit
Chapter of the American Technion
Society.
He and Ruth established a research
fellowship in 1986 to further the func-
tional approach to hands-on training
for students in design, drafting plans
and actual construction.
Louis Milgrom, American Technion
Society member for more than 50 years
and former local chapter president, says
of Redstone's dedication to Technion:
"I was introduced to the Detroit
Chapter of the American Technion
Society by Lou Redstone and have been
constantly amazed at his relentless
efforts on its behalf. In his own quiet
