start with research

It was located on
Livernois, near
Seven Mile Road
... and owned by
Joe Cartwright,
who called himself
Josef Charron
Joe was an enter-
prising gent who
parlayed his French
mother's knowledge of the culinary
art, a World War II tour of duty as
an army cook in the South Pacific,
and 12 years' experience as a chef at
the Pontchartrain Wine Cellars ...
into Anatole's.
As far as the Josef Charron was
concerned, Joe used to say,
"Whoever heard of a French chef
with a name like Joe Cartwright?" I
have taken poetic license with my
own name. In French, Joe
Cartwright comes out Josef Charron,
nest ce pas?"
Anatole's started out with a strictly
French menu, but realistically, Joe
decided that he had to make some
concessions to the tastes of his cus-

American dishes and French cuisine.
To compensate for his lack of
European background, Joe traveled
widely, picking up recipes at some of
the best French restaurants in the
country ... His canard l'orange came
from the Cafe de Paris in Chicago ...
The veau Bonaparte from the Cafe
Bonaparte in Chicago's Sheraton-
.Blackstone Hotel ... Recipe for his
authentic Crepes Suzette from the
Cordon Bleu in New York.
FOR ANYTHING FROM a
corned beef sandwich to a jeroboam
of fine champagne, Alban's in
Birmingham was a safe bet ... The
unique spot on Hunter Boulevard,
near Maple, was interesting.
Whether folks were planning a
parry, shopping for the person who
had everything, or just plain hungry,
they could have probably found
what they were looking for at
Alban's.
It was originally opened as a gro-
cery and gradually added different
types of items in food, liquid good-
ies and unusual gifts.
"Everything is for sale except the
help," original owners Tom and
Leonilda Alban used to say ... This
included some very ingenious deco-
rations ... One that would have been
very hard to take home was the huge
hogshead which formed the compan-
